The latest development update for Microsoft Flight Simulator hints that helicopters may be included in the game, but not until at least next year. Microsoft Flight Simulator may include helicopters in the future.

Since its first release over four decades ago, Microsoft Flight Simulator has become something of a PC gaming mainstay. With its realistic controls and stunning scenery, it's no surprise that the famous flying simulator was accepted into the Strong Museum's World Video Game Hall of Fame not long ago. Despite this, there is one element the series has been missing all along: helicopters. This, however, may be about to change.

Much is being discussed about the future updates of Microsoft Flight Simulator on a blog post on the game's official website. Among other things, a series of screenshots were added to the article, which reveals a table of fan responses. The first photograph plainly demonstrates that helicopters are something that the community wishes to see. With 1,506 votes, the developer has declared that it intends to provide the feature, but not until 2022. The second image also displays the #43 position, which states "Airbus Helicopters H135 Community Mod" and has 352 votes. The word "planned" has been written next to it once more.

Helicopters are clearly something that people want to see included in the game. In fact, a third-party developer went ahead and accomplished just that. FlyInside released the Bell 47 helicopter from M*A*S*H* as a DLC for Microsoft Flight Simulator in May. According to a genuine pilot, this unofficially added helicopter was a nice addition with realistic controls. With that, it's clear that not only is it a requested feature, but it's also completely feasible inside the game's engine.

Microsoft is now planning the game's release on Xbox Series X/S. The console version of Microsoft Flight Simulator was supposed to be released in June. This date, however, has been moved back, and this port will now be available on July 27, which means console players won't have to wait too long.

Now games are constantly being updated, such as the latest significant patch that improved the visuals of the Nordic nations, the addition of helicopters is not far off. Given that the series has been running since 1982, it's strange that Microsoft hasn't introduced them sooner, but with the community now making it their top priority, the developer has clearly listened to the comments and will hopefully be on the case soon.
