Square Enix gives fans their first clear look at the new Fullmetal Alchemist mobile game after teasing it earlier this year.

The popular manga series Fullmetal Alchemist debuted 20 years ago in 2021, and Square Enix marked the occasion by announcing the release of a brand new mobile game based on the series earlier this year. It suggested back then that it will have more to share by the end of the year, and now it has with the first look at Fullmetal Alchemist Mobile in action.

Square Enix has revealed that Fullmetal Alchemist Mobile will be released for iOS and Android in Japan in summer 2022 as a free-to-play title with item-based in-app purchases. The official website is now accepting pre-registrations.

Fullmetal Alchemist was created by Hiromu Arakawa and is set in a universe where humans can magically rearrange matter using a fancy alchemy system. After an effort to use alchemy to bring their dead mother back to life goes horrifically wrong, Edward loses an arm and a leg, and Alphonse is reduced to a soul bound to a suit of armor, the story follows brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric. This sends them on a quest to find a means to restore their bodies, all while meeting a big, memorable cast and learning a lot about their world's dark secrets.

Fullmetal Alchemist Mobile is a smartphone game based on Hiromu Arakawa's dark fantasy manga Fullmetal Alchemist, which has sold over 80 million copies worldwide. In high-quality 3D CG, the original tale and fight sequences are brought to life, and the universe of the evocative masterwork is faithfully recreated.  Even in their grief, the two brothers who practiced the taboo alchemy known as Human Transmutation embarked on a quest to restore everything they had lost.

Players will be able to relive the story in a whole new way with Fullmetal Alchemist Mobile. With a new trailer, Square Enix stated that the game will be published in Japan next summer for iOS and Android devices and that it will be free-to-play with in-game purchases. However, no mention of distribution outside of Japan has been made thus far, thus it is unclear when or if an international release will take place.

The teaser and official website (as translated by Gematsu) focus more on how the game would portray Fullmetal Alchemist's tale, with "many renowned sequences" reproduced in "beautiful 3D CG" and a full and "extravagant" voice cast. Square Enix does, however, display gameplay of Edward and Alphonse fighting a man atop a train using a fighting game-like UI, and it hints that gamers will be treated to "exhilarating" and "hot alchemy combat" with fan-favorite characters like the Elrics, Roy Mustang, and others.

Many manga and anime series, such as Dragon Ball, Naruto, and others, have spawned a slew of popular video game adaptations, but Fullmetal Alchemist has yet to do so. In the last 20 years, a few attempts have been made, but none have come close to matching the popularity of games like Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm or Dragon Ball FigherZ. It's too early to say whether Fullmetal Alchemist Mobile will follow in the footsteps of its predecessors or break the mold, but with any luck, fans will get a game as memorable as the series it's based on.

In summer 2022, Fullmetal Alchemist Mobile will be released in Japan for iOS and Android phones.
