Putin ally Medvedchuk arrested within special operation of Ukraine’s Security Service

Medvedchuk, a Putin ally, was arrested as part of a special operation by Ukraine's Security Service.

MP Viktor Medvedchuk (Opposition Platform — For Life faction) was captured as a result of a special operation carried out by Ukraine's Security Service.

"Thanks to the Ukrainian Security Service, a special operation was carried out. Congratulations! Details will be released at a later date. Ukraine, bravo!" President Volodymyr Zelensky made the announcement on Instagram.

He also shared a picture of Medvedchuk.

On February 27, it was reported that MP Viktor Medvedchuk, who was suspected of treason, had escaped from house arrest.

Medvedchuk was placed under house arrest in connection with two criminal cases: producing oil and gas in the Black Sea and assisting and abetting the actions of a terrorist group by supplying coal from the temporarily seized Donbas areas.

Medvedchuk, the leader of a pro-Russian opposition party in Ukraine and a staunch opponent of Kyiv’s appeals to join NATO, has extremely close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Russian president is the godfather to Medvedchuk's daughter.

Some experts believe Medvedchuk would be on Putin's shortlist if he wanted to install a puppet leader after toppling Ukraine's government.
