Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's Major Innovations preview, new era begun

Ghost is here to greet you as you enter the next era of Call of Duty.

It's no secret that Infinity Ward has been working on a sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare since its release in 2019, and now the studio has finally revealed its next blockbuster. It's called Modern Warfare II, and it includes both a single-player campaign and multiplayer, which includes a new tactical co-op mode.

Modern Warfare 2 is the sequel to the rebooted Modern Warfare series, which was released in 2019. Infinity Ward created a new, original story in which players take on the role of members of Task Force 141, a multinational special ops group. Modern Warfare 2's game engine innovations will power not only the single-player, co-op, and multiplayer modes, but also the next Warzone, the franchise's battle royale game.

In Modern Warfare 2, Task Force 141's mission is to stop a global threat. Captain John Price, Captain John "Soap" MacTavish, Sgt. Kyle "Gaz" Garrick, and fan favorite Lt. Simon "Ghost" Riley comprise the squad. Kate Laswell of the CIA and Col. Alejandro Vargos of the Mexican special forces are helping the group.

The squad is battling Al-Qatala, the terrorist organization from the first Modern Warfare game. They were armed with weapons provided by Hasan, a man with ties to a Mexican cartel. You must travel to multiple global locations in Modern Warfare 2 to learn more about the threat and fight back when possible.

The campaign missions in Modern Warfare 2 introduce a slew of new features. One of the most significant shifts? Swimming.

One mission, titled Wet Work, takes place on the docks in Amsterdam, where a major arms deal is being finalized. Players must use silenced pistols or stealth takedowns from the water to dispatch patrolling enemies. It's a great opportunity to see the game's latest water physics, which not only looks great but also affects bullet trajectory when fired in the water.

Convoy, a vehicle mission, showcased the game's new car mechanics. Players can lean out the window to shoot at enemies and use the car as cover whether they're driving or riding in the passenger seat. Climbing on top of a vehicle and jumping off to land on another vehicle is also an option.

Tower, a mission that requires players to rappel down the side of a building, was also revealed quickly. They'll have the option of coming down normally or upside down, depending on what they think is the best option.

Modernizing Modern Warfare

Almost every mission we saw in the Call of Duty series featured a new advancement.

Previously, Infinity Ward was worried about fighting underwater. The team claimed that it was only now that they were able to create the right visuals and physics to make the game's gunplay feel accurate and rewarding. Weapons lose their effectiveness underwater, and grenades and flashbangs behave differently when detonated below the surface.

Members of the Infinity Ward team also discussed ways to improve the AI in the game. Computer-controlled players, whether friendly or hostile, behave in a more realistic manner. They are more aware of their surroundings because they want to "survive." They peek around corners and are generally more aware of their surroundings. They'll also broadcast their actions, allowing players to pick up on nonverbal cues from AI-controlled teammates and enemies.

These improvements are all part of "CoD 2.0," which will be implemented across the series, including the next Warzone game, which Infinity Ward will reveal at a later date.

On October 28, Modern Warfare 2 will be available for $70 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Battle.net. The game will also be available on Steam, which is a first for the series since Call of Duty games were only available on Battle.net starting in 2017. The open beta will be available to those who preorder the game when it launches later this year.
