Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 has sold over 20 million units. Sony has also noted that it will significantly increase console production.

The company told GI.biz that it was planning a'significant ramp-up' in console production for the rest of the year.

Due to a shortage of components, high-end gaming devices like the PS5 and Xbox Series X have struggled to keep up with demand since the pandemic, so if more consoles were available, the PS5 would have sold even more.

In a statement, SIE's Veronica Rogers, SVP, Head of Global Sales and Business Operations, said, "We are thrilled to share that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has sold more than 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally."

"Our teams have worked tirelessly since PS5's launch to deliver a truly next-gen gaming console that has won the world over, and we want to thank the fans for their support."

"Your excitement for the PlayStation brand motivates and inspires us to develop new technology, engineer the future of gaming, and continue to make PlayStation the best place to play."

Last month, Sony revealed its most recent global PS5 sales figure of 19.3 million units.

Sony has stated that it expects to sell 56 % more PS5s this fiscal year than the previous year, but that this will not be enough to meet consumer demand.

Last month, Sony revealed that it shipped 11.5 million PS5 consoles in the fiscal year that ended in March 2022, falling short of its initial target of 14.8 million consoles by over 3 million units due to parts shortages.

The PS5 is still a highly desirable item, with restocks of the console selling out quickly. While the item's resale market has calmed, especially in comparison to 2021, many people are still paying more than the selling value for it.
