Sony has officially announced that the Gran Turismo film will be released next year.

According to Deadline, the film, simply titled Gran Turismo, will be released on August 11, 2023.

The movie will be directed by Neill Blomkamp (Demonic, Chappie, Elysium, District 9) and produced by Sony's Columbia Pictures studio.

The script was written by Jason Hall, who also wrote American Sniper and Thank You for Your Service.

"Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver," according to Sony's brief plot description.

This suggests that the film is based on Nissan and Sony's GT Academy contest, which ran from 2008 to 2016 and awarded winners a spot in Nissan's Driver Development Program.

Jann Mardenborough, a British racer who won in 2011 and has since competed in the GP3 Series, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Japanese Super GT series, is one of the GT Academy's most notable real-life success stories.

Gran Turismo is one of Sony's many video game-based film and television projects currently in development.

Along with Gran Turismo, Sony announced last month that it is working on TV adaptations of God of War (with Amazon) and Horizon (with Netflix).

In 2019, the company established PlayStation Productions, a studio created in collaboration with Sony Pictures to adapt its original game properties for film and television.

The $120 million Uncharted film starring Tom Holland was the first major PlayStation Productions project to be released in January.

The Last of Us HBO TV series, co-written by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, was also recently completed at the studio.

A live-action Ghost of Tsushima film directed by John Wick's Chad Stahelski, a Twisted Metal TV series from Deadpool's writers, and a Jak and Daxter adaptation directed by Uncharted movie director Ruben Fleischer, among other projects, are in the works.
