PS5 is the joint fourth-fastest console to sell 2 million units in the UK

In the United Kingdom, the PlayStation 5 is the joint fourth-fastest console to sell two million units.

According to GfK data published on GamesIndustry.biz, it reached the milestone in 98 weeks, which is the same amount of time it took the PS3 to do so.

The Wii sold two million units in 57 weeks, the PS2 in 60 weeks, and the PS4 in 75 weeks.

The PS5's performance is notable given its relatively high price (which was recently raised) and the fact that stock shortages have held it back since its November 2020 launch.

"Given the stock issues surrounding PS5, it is safe to say it would have easily outpaced PS3 to 2 million units," GfK CEO Dorian Bloch said. "One thing is clear: the significantly higher price of the PS5 has not slowed sales, with consumers willing to pay the £105 premium shown on the average price of both consoles over this 2-million-unit period." With two million units sold, the PS5 has the highest revenue of any console.

"The Xbox One took 104 weeks, or exactly two years, to reach two million, while the Xbox 360 took 110 weeks, or 2.12 years." Although the Xbox 360 was slower to reach this milestone than the Xbox One, it surpassed the Xbox One after three years and continues to be Microsoft's largest install, with around nine million in the UK."

According to Sony, global lifetime PS5 shipments reached 21.7 million units in the three months ending June 30, 2022.

According to recent analysis, shipments appear to be more plentiful year on year.

David Gibson, a senior analyst at MST Financial, claimed earlier this week that PlayStation shipments to the United States in September 2022 would be 400% higher than the previous year.

Christopher Dring, the head of GamesIndustry.biz, tweeted last week that he had learned that PlayStation had a strong September overall in terms of console availability, adding that "one source told me it was the best it's been for over a year."
