Updated October 22, 2026
For years, buying an Amazon tablet meant one of two things: you were on a tight budget, or you were shopping for a kid. That just changed. With the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, Amazon has built something that reviewers are openly comparing to the iPad Air, and Bloomberg’s reviewer went as far as calling it the best Android tablet you can buy for under $1,000.
But the critics are split. Some love the screen and the price, while others say the software still needs work. Below you will find every spec side by side, the real cost once you add a keyboard and a pen, how long Amazon will support the tablet, and a plain answer to the question that matters: which one should you buy?
Alexa Tablet 12 Pro at a glance
- Display: 11.95-inch, 3:2 screen, 2,800 x 1,840 resolution, 120Hz
- Chip: MediaTek Dimensity 8400 with 8GB or 16GB of RAM
- Software: Android 16 with full Google Play Store access
- Price: from $499.99 (Nanomatte display from $549.99)
- Battery: Amazon claims up to 16 hours of video playback
- On sale since: October 14, 2026 in the US, Mexico and Canada
Why This Tablet Is Such a Big Deal
Amazon announced its new Alexa Tablet lineup in late September. It comes in 8-inch, 11-inch and 12-inch sizes and replaces the Fire brand that Amazon launched back in 2011. Bloomberg notes that the redesign carries the stamp of Panos Panay, the devices chief Amazon hired from Microsoft three years ago to overhaul its hardware.
The 12 Pro sits at the top of the range, and it is very different from the Fire tablets of the past. Where the old Fire HD 10 had a plastic body, 4GB of RAM and a very old chip, the 12 Pro has an aluminum body and a modern 4nm eight-core processor.

Which Alexa Tablet 12 Pro Should You Choose? Prices and Configurations
- Standard display, 8GB RAM + 128GB: $499.99
- Nanomatte display, 8GB RAM + 128GB: $549.99
- Nanomatte display, 16GB RAM + 256GB: $679.99
- Nanomatte 128GB with keyboard and pen bundle: $699.99
- Nanomatte 256GB with keyboard and pen bundle: $799.99
For most people, the $549.99 Nanomatte model is the sweet spot. The anti-glare screen is the thing reviewers keep praising, and it costs only $50 more. The 16GB version is mainly for heavy multitasking and gaming.
On Apple’s side, the 11-inch iPad Air with 128GB of storage now starts at $749. Apple raised the price from $599 in June 2026, citing rising memory and component costs. The 256GB model costs $849, and the 13-inch model starts at $949. Amazon does sometimes discount it, so check current deals.
The Big Change: Goodbye Fire OS, Hello Google Play
Older Amazon tablets were locked into Amazon’s own app store. The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro runs Android 16 with the full Google Play Store, so you can install YouTube, Gmail, Netflix, Google Docs and almost any other Android app, right next to Prime Video, Kindle and Audible. Amazon has also said this is full Android with Google certification, not a modified version.
That one decision is what turns it from a media tablet into a real iPad alternative.
A Display That Beats the iPad Air on Paper
- 120Hz refresh rate: scrolling and animations look smoother. To get 120Hz on an iPad you currently need an iPad Pro, and the iPad Air stays at 60Hz.
- Sharper image: about 280 pixels per inch, compared with 264 on the iPad Air.
- 3:2 aspect ratio: a taller screen that gives you more room for documents and split-screen apps.
- Nanomatte option: a special finish that nearly eliminates glare and gives the screen a more paper-like feel. Apple only offers a similar nano-texture glass on the iPad Pro.
Alexa+ Is Built Into Everything
Amazon has built its Alexa+ assistant deeply into the operating system, including the home screen, with an “Ask Alexa” widget and an opt-in screen awareness feature. Alexa+ requires a Prime membership or a separate Alexa+ subscription. If you already live in Amazon’s world, with Prime Video, Kindle books and Amazon Music, the tablet fits right in.
The downside: reviewers noted a dedicated Alexa key on the keyboard accessory that one found annoying, and The Verge felt the tablet leans too hard on Amazon’s own apps.
Performance, Gaming and Battery Life
Reviewers say the tablet feels snappy and much faster than any previous Amazon tablet. Amazon claims it has double the processing power and graphics that are roughly nine times faster than its older tablets, and one tester found it capable of running demanding mobile games like Honkai: Star Rail and Wuthering Waves.
It is not as powerful as the iPad Air M4 or Samsung’s top-end Galaxy Tab. BGR notes that the $749 iPad Air has a far more capable chip and a more polished software ecosystem. For reading, streaming, browsing and everyday apps, though, the Alexa Tablet is more than enough.
On battery, Amazon claims up to 16 hours of video playback. One reviewer measured around 12 to 14 hours in real-world use, a bit below the claim but still excellent for a tablet this size.
Cameras and Audio
The Alexa Tablet has a 13-megapixel autofocus rear camera and an 8-megapixel fixed-focus front camera. Cameras are not the highlight: BGR found that neither tablet takes impressive low-light photos, though the iPad holds up better. On the audio side, Amazon includes quad speakers with Dolby Atmos.
The Real Price: Keyboard and Pen Included
Most people who use a tablet for work or school will want a keyboard and a stylus, and this is where the price gap really opens up. According to TechRepublic’s comparison:
- Alexa Tablet 12 Pro ($499.99) + Pro Keyboard ($149.99) + Pro Pen ($89.99) = $739.97
- 11-inch iPad Air ($749) + Magic Keyboard ($269) + Apple Pencil Pro ($129) = $1,147
That is a difference of more than $400 for a similar setup.
How Long Will Amazon Update It?
This is a fair worry for any Android tablet, and early coverage noted that Amazon had not yet spelled out its Android update plan. Since then, Amazon has said it will support the tablet with software security updates for at least four years. Amazon’s support page for the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro lists security updates through at least December 31, 2032, and up to 7 Android OS upgrades. Note that the page we found was Amazon’s UK version, so US buyers should check the US support page. Android 17 is expected to arrive in early 2027.
Apple still has the longer track record on software updates, but Amazon’s commitment is a big step up from the Fire tablet days.
What the Reviewers Say
- Bloomberg: calls it the best Android tablet under $1,000 and a credible iPad rival for much less money.
- Engadget: gave it 8.4 out of 10 and praised the value, though it says Android apps still are not great on a big screen.
- The Shortcut: 4.5 out of 5, and its reviewer called it the Android tablet they would recommend above all others.
- The Verge: gave it a much lower 6, saying the display is great but the software has too much Amazon in it.
- ByTerminal: loved the Nanomatte screen and premium build, but noted occasional stutters and many apps that are not optimized for large screens.
Who Should Buy Which?
Buy the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro if you:
- mostly read, watch videos, browse and use everyday apps
- already use Prime Video, Kindle or other Amazon services
- want a big, smooth, glare-resistant screen without paying iPad Air prices
- need a keyboard and pen and want to keep the total under $800
Buy the iPad Air M4 if you:
- do creative work like editing, drawing or music production
- rely on apps that look and run best on iPadOS
- want a cellular model, since Amazon lists no cellular version
- care most about proven long-term software support
Consider waiting if update support is your top concern or you want to see independent battery tests first.
