What Happened
Authorities received a call about a shot fired into a car outside the school at 12:59 p.m. Officers arrived on the scene within minutes, and further 911 calls came from inside the school as the building was immediately placed under lockdown.
Police confirmed that the 16-year-old gunman gained entry to the school by shooting directly at locked doors. The suspect was found dead inside the school building when officers arrived.
Two surviving victims—a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher—were transported to St. Charles Bend hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
Parent Stops Gunman inside School
In a major update to the ongoing investigation, family members and law enforcement sources revealed that the community member who confronted and killed the suspect was the father of two students locked inside the school. Upon realizing an active shooter situation was unfolding, the armed parent pursued the teenager into the facility and neutralized him before additional lives could be lost.
Community Response
Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook said the community was stunned and heartbroken by the tragedy. All classes in the Bend-La Pine school district were canceled on Friday. Parents and loved ones gathered at Journey Church in Bend to reunite with students, while thousands attended a candlelight vigil in Bend to honor the victims.
What Is Still Unknown
Law enforcement officials have not publicly released the shooter's official motive, and investigations into how the suspect acquired the weapon remain ongoing. As federal and local authorities continue gathering evidence, further updates may follow.
