Pled Not Guilty, But Selma Blair Now Faces Federal Charges Over Flight Incident

NEW YORK — Actress Selma Blair pleaded not guilty in a New York court to two felony assault charges following a chaotic series of incidents aboard a commercial flight and at a local hospital. However, the legal ordeal for the 54-year-old Hollywood star is far from over, as authorities have served her with notice of potential federal charges.

Despite entering a "not guilty" plea during her arraignment in Queens Criminal Court and being released on a $20,000 bond, legal sources confirmed that Blair was issued a formal violation notice alerting her to impending federal prosecution. The federal charges stem from alleged assaults committed within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States.

If convicted on the state and potential federal charges, the Cruel Intentions and Legally Blonde star could face up to seven years in prison.

The Incident: What Transpired Aboard Delta Flight 938

According to a criminal complaint obtained from law enforcement officials, the controversy began on Sunday aboard a Delta Air Lines flight traveling from Los Angeles to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Investigators allege that an in-flight disturbance escalated into a physical altercation between Blair and two flight attendants. Upon landing at JFK Airport, Port Authority police officers and medical personnel intervened to assist and evaluate the actress.

Authorities report that the altercations continued on the ground:

  • Port Authority Officer: Blair allegedly struck a responding officer who was assisting in transporting her from the aircraft.
  • Medical Staff: During subsequent medical evaluation at a New York hospital, she reportedly engaged in another physical altercation with a registered nurse treating her.

Defense Cites Medical Emergency and Missing Medication

During her court appearance on Monday, Blair’s attorney highlighted that this marks the actress’s first arrest, framing the entire episode as an involuntary medical crisis rather than intentional criminal conduct.

"Selma experienced a severe medical emergency that led to the alleged conduct," a representative for Blair stated. "Upon landing, she received immediate medical evaluation and treatment, and she remains in stable condition."

Blair went public with her diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2018 and has long been open about her struggles with dystonia, a neurological movement disorder that causes involuntary and painful muscle contractions.

Her legal team explained that long-distance air travel, coupled with missed doses of crucial neurological medications, severely impacted her central nervous system, leading to disorientation, confusion, and acute physiological distress during the flight.

Historical Context and What’s Next

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic condition affecting the central nervous system, where the immune system attacks the protective sheath surrounding nerve fibers. Medical experts note that missed medications combined with physical stress can trigger sudden neurological flare-ups and cognitive impairment.

This is not the first time Blair’s health and air travel have collided in the media. In June 2016, she was removed from a flight on a stretcher following an in-flight disturbance. She later issued a public apology, explaining that mixing alcohol with prescription medication had caused a complete blackout.

Blair is scheduled to return to state court on January 19, 2027. In the interim, her legal counsel is expected to gather detailed medical records and expert neurological testimony to address both the state felony counts and the pending federal jurisdiction charges.
