Emergency response at the soccer field after a truck drove through a youth game in Wichita, Kansas

Last updated: October 18, 2026. This is a developing story, and details may change as police release more information.

WICHITA, Kan. — A 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man were killed, and 11 other people were hospitalized, after a truck drove onto a field during a youth soccer game at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita on Saturday, October 17, 2026, according to police. The incident turned an ordinary weekend afternoon for local families into one of the most heartbreaking events the city has seen in years.

What Happened at Stryker Sports Complex

Emergency dispatchers began receiving 911 calls at about 3:25 p.m. local time, reporting that a vehicle had driven through a soccer game at the complex in northeast Wichita. Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses said that when officers arrived, the driver was still inside the truck along with two juveniles. A witness told local station KWCH that a black pickup truck came through the youth soccer fields and struck several people before coming to a stop, and responders found community members already helping the injured by the time they got there.

Victims and Injuries

Police said the two people who died were a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, both from McPherson, Kansas, who were not related to each other, and their names have not been publicly released. Of the 11 people taken to hospitals, 10 had traumatic injuries that police believe are not life-threatening, including five children between the ages of 5 and 9, while the remaining patient, a 61-year-old woman, was hospitalized for a non-traumatic medical issue.

The Driver and the Investigation

Police said the driver is a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, who is in custody and has been cooperative with investigators. Authorities believe she had a child playing soccer at the complex, though not on the field where the truck went through. Police have not said why the truck entered the field, and they are still working to determine what happened and whether charges will be filed. They have asked anyone who recorded video at the complex to share it with the Wichita Police Department to help the investigation.

Officials Respond

“Today is a heartbreaking day for Wichita,” Mayor Lily Wu told reporters, according to ABC News, adding that families had come to the complex to enjoy a Saturday afternoon watching their children play. She urged people to avoid the area while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene, and said her thoughts were with the children and families affected.

About the Stryker Sports Complex

The complex hosts recreational and competitive youth soccer leagues for age groups ranging from under-5 through high school, as well as adult leagues, which means younger children regularly play on the same fields where the truck came through. This story will be updated as police share more details about the victims, the driver and the cause of the crash.
