Microsoft's xCloud service will deliver next-generation Xbox games to the Xbox One

Microsoft's xCloud service will allow Xbox One customers to play next-generation Xbox titles. The announcement was hidden in a blog post summarizing Microsoft's Xbox + Bethesda event, with the company confirming intentions to use Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud) on Xbox One consoles. That indicates 2013 hardware will be able to play Xbox Series X exclusive titles starting in 2021, prolonging the lifespan of what would otherwise be outdated machines.

“Team Xbox has spent more than two decades focusing on making Xbox a place where fans can find amazing games, committed creators, and the world's most enthusiastic community. We are looking forward to sharing more about how we will bring many of these next-gen titles, such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, to your console through Xbox Cloud Gaming, much as we do with mobile devices, tablets, and browsers,” says Will Tuttle, editor in chief of Microsoft's Xbox Wire.

Microsoft has only defined xCloud on consoles as a means for gamers to “try [games] before you download” until now, but it's apparent that the firm sees the service as much more. Microsoft promoted Microsoft Flight Simulator as an Xbox One game before discreetly deleting references to the console's December debut. Microsoft has stated that Flight Simulator will now be available on Xbox Series X and S consoles on July 27th.

However, it is unclear when xCloud game streaming will be accessible for Xbox One consoles. It is unlikely to be available in time for the July release of Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Kareem Choudhry, Microsoft's head of cloud gaming, had stated that xCloud will be integrated onto consoles later this year.

The availability of xCloud will be a nice boost for Xbox One consoles, especially since Microsoft is updating its server blades later this month to support Xbox Series X hardware. It will allow older hardware to play forthcoming titles like Starfield, which, like Flight Simulator, will be unique to the future Xbox Series X / S consoles. Forza Horizon 5, which will include DirectX Raytracing on both the Xbox Series X and S, and Battlefield 2042, which will run at 60 frames per second and accommodate 128 players on the Xbox Series X|S. Some of the titles that will be released next year by our first-party studios and partners, such as Starfield, Redfall, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, will demand the speed, performance, and technology of the Xbox Series X|S.
