Grand Theft Auto Online support for earlier system generations, such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, is coming to an end. Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto Online for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 would be discontinued by the end of 2021.

Grand Theft Auto Online's creators defend their choice by stating that they want to develop the game on newer platforms. No one believes that Rockstar will continue to maintain the game for as long as it is feasible - the income from the necessary (at least for now) GTA 5 and microtransactions speaks for itself. Despite being over eight years old, the game will be released on ninth-generation platforms. Unfortunately, the game's demise on PS3 and Xbox 360 has been long anticipated, since the developers ceased delivering substantial updates for those systems in late 2015.

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Grand Theft Auto Online will be phased down, according to a blog post, as Rockstar Games shifts its attention to the upgraded versions of the game arriving for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The multiplayer mode's demise includes website stat tracking via Rockstar Games Social Club. Shark Cash Cards will no longer be available for purchase on outdated systems after September 15, right before the formal closure on December 15.

Rockstar Games discreetly revealed in the same article that it will also be shutting down the online capabilities of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3. Max Payne 3 will lose stat monitoring, leaderboards, and online multiplayer, whereas L.A. Noire will lose just online stat tracking.

While players will no longer be able to access the online components of those games, any progress made in the single-player campaigns will be untouched. The PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions of the game will continue to get updates as usual.

Grand Theft Auto Online was released as the multiplayer component for the mega-popular Grand Theft Auto V. While the game was beset with technical difficulties when it was first released, it has managed to survive and evolve into one of Rockstar Games' most successful ventures to date. Players take on the role of a newcomer to the game's fictitious metropolis of Los Santos and are charged with obtaining as much as possible by any means necessary.

The next-gen edition of Grand Theft Auto Online, which will be released on November 11, 2021, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, has been revealed by Rockstar Games. The game's creators have yet to reveal what enhancements will be included in the Enhanced Edition, although an updated lighting system and faster load times are almost certainly included.

All of these changes will have no effect on Story Mode access or progress for any of these games on any platform.
