Death Stranding sales figures are finally revealed by Kojima Productions

The PS4 and PC title has sold 5 million sales, with a PS5 version scheduled in September.

Death Stranding, developed by Kojima Productions, has sold five million copies worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PC, according to the developer.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, the studio's president of publishing Jay Boor stated that Death Stranding fared "pretty well," and that the studio was enthusiastic about the impending Director's Cut, which is set to be released on PlayStation 5.

Death Stranding was released in November 2019 for the PlayStation 4 and in July 2020 for the PC.

“With Death Stranding being the first title developed by Kojima Productions, it has performed fairly well in terms of sales,” he remarked. “As of March 2021, Death Stranding had sold over five million units for PlayStation 4 and PC worldwide.”

Death Stranding's sales are comparable to Kojima's previous game, Metal Gear Solid V, which sold 6 million units by the end of 2015, but on more platforms and in a shorter period of time.

Death Stranding: Director's Cut was announced last month at the Summer Games Fest Kickoff Live.

Along with improved aesthetics, the game will have a variety of additional features not found in the PS4 edition.

New combat techniques have been added to make defeating adversaries more enjoyable. Melee attacks have been improved, a new'maser gun' can be obtained, and mounted machine guns can be found.

Boor, the publisher's head, told GI that the core Kojima Productions crew hasn't altered much since the game's release, though it has had to change how it functions during the pandemic.

The size of the team has remained essentially the same, Boor added, despite a few operational expansions.

“However, the studio has altered dramatically in terms of how we operate, as the epidemic brought many unexpected obstacles. We, like everyone else, must continually adjust and consider how we can continue to create and construct things safely.”

Also, Death Stranding is a first-party exclusive for Sony. After selling 6.5 million copies up until March 2021, Ghost of Tsushima has sold four million copies in barely over a month.

As early as last year, there was some rumour that Sony was dissatisfied with the sales of Death Stranding.

To boost sales even further, Death Stranding will also be getting a Director's Cut in September, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
