Nintendo's announces Wii U and 3DS eShops will no longer accept card payments

From January 2022, Nintendo will no longer accept card payments on the Wii U and 3DS eShops.

On Nintendo's Japanese customer service account, the company quietly disclosed the policy change. “Notice of ‘Termination of use of credit cards and electronic money for transportation at the Nintendo 3DS series and Nintendo eShop in Wii U' has been posted,” the tweet notes.

On January 22, 2022, support will come to an end. Players, on the other hand, have a variety of alternatives for purchasing products on either eShop.

A blog post explains the remaining payment options, which include prepaid cards, debit or credit cards via the Nintendo website, and adding balance to Nintendo accounts via the Switch eShop. Players can total up their balances if they link a Nintendo account to two or more platforms.

Several other features, such as the ability to disable the internet browser's filtering function and the automatic credit and debit card renewal for time tickets in Wii U Karaoke, will be discontinued on January 22.

This is just one of Nintendo's moves to slow down support for the 3DS and Wii U platforms. It only recently removed Netflix support from both systems.

The Wii U and 3DS are presently the only options for users to access many classic titles without purchasing legacy hardware.

The Virtual Console on the Wii U is now the most modern platform for players to access Nintendo 64, DS, Game Boy Color, and Super NES titles. The Nintendo Switch has several old games but no support for newer consoles.

Nintendo also discontinued repairs for the 3DS and 3DS XL systems earlier this year, saying that it would no longer accept damaged consoles as part of its repairs program.
