Starfield is an Xbox exclusive, according to Bethesda and Xbox executives, and will not be released on any PlayStation console in the future.

Pete Hines, Bethesda's SVP of global marketing, and Aaron Greenberg, Xbox's GM of games marketing, both took to Twitter to dispel rumors after some of Hines' comments during a Bethesda Gamescom stream were misinterpreted as implying that Starfield would be coming to PS5 in the future.

On the stream, Hines stated that Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda didn't rule out the possibility of a future Bethesda game for the PlayStation.

He explained, "It's not sorry, you'll never get to play anything by Bethesda again' situation." “Obviously, there He then moved on to Starfield, saying, "It was announced as an Xbox exclusive," before adding, "I don't know if I would go so far as to say you're done ever playing stuff on PlayStation." But, once again, I don't have an answer right now.”

Most believed that this meant Starfield wouldn't be limited to Xbox indefinitely, but Hines and Xbox's Greenberg swiftly rejected this theory on Twitter. There will be some games on PlayStation that you won't be able to play.”

Some took this as a hint that Starfield might not be exclusive to Xbox indefinitely, but Hines and Xbox's Greenberg quickly debunked this claim on Twitter.

Greenberg clarified that Starfield was an Xbox-only game after one Twitter user claimed that Hines' comments meant "the door might still be open for [the] possibility of games like Starfield coming to PS5 in the future."

“On November 11, 2022, Starfield will be a [sic] launching exclusively on Xbox Series X|S and PC,” he reiterated. “Game Pass members will be able to play it on Xbox One and PC from the start. I know we've said all of this before, and nothing has changed or will change.”

Greenberg responded when it was pointed out to him that the phrase "launching exclusively" could be interpreted as a timed exclusive: "We have tried to be as clear as possible, not a timed exclusive, this is simply where the game is being made."

Another user then questioned Hines about the situation, asking if he was implying that Starfield would be coming to PS5 in the future.

“No, that isn't what I was implying,” Hines responded, using a Bob's Burgers gif to imply that some people are grasping at straws.

Starfield was shown for the first time since its announcement in 2018 at E3 2021, during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase. On Xbox Series X|S and PC, the in-engine trailer confirmed a November 2022 release date.

Starfield is the next big RPG from the creator of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and it was first teased in June 2018 with a teaser trailer, after which director Todd Howard said it was a game he'd wanted to make "for a long, long time."

Bethesda Game Studios, the award-winning creators of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4, said in June following the E3 trailer reveal, "Starfield is the first new universe from Bethesda Game Studios in 25 years."

“Create any character you choose and explore with incredible freedom in this next-generation role-playing game set amid the stars. Starfield uses cutting-edge technology and the all-new Creation Engine 2 to take you on a journey through space as you attempt to solve humanity's biggest mystery.”
