In some areas, certain PlayStation 3 games cannot be updated after launch, according to a number of PlayStation 3 players. The following list contains PS3 games that will no longer download working patch updates.

Several PlayStation 3 customers have reported that a number of PlayStation 3 games can no longer be updated in certain regions. Sony has announced that their digital stores for PSP, PS3, and PS Vita would be shut down in a few months.

Rumors about shop closures began around the end of March and persisted for almost a week until Sony summarily confirmed the claims in a FAQ article. To put it mildly, the little interval between the announcement and the shutdowns is generating considerable consternation within the PlayStation community. The PSP and PS3 shops are set to close this summer on July 2, with the PS Vita storefront closing not long after on August 27. As a result, PlayStation owners are racing to make as many digital purchases on these systems as possible, as the hardware maker has promised that downloading already purchased games would continue to be an option when the shops close. Because of a new finding, the viability of such an alternative is now being put into doubt.

As gamers return to the PS3, PSNProfiles users have discovered that several PS3 titles no longer have access to updates. When starting some games, the download for updates does not start, and pressing "Triangle" to manually check for patches does not work either, as enthusiasts found. PSNProfiles users compiled a comprehensive list of titles that have been affected, including both disc and digital editions. For example, the digital EU edition of Battlefield 4 refuses to download fixes. Patches for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow do not trigger on disc in the United States, while some players have reported difficulties in other areas as well. Patches for Gran Turismo 5, Ghostbusters: The Video Game, and LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga are also unavailable in the EU.

Obviously, this is a defect that Sony will address as soon as possible, considering that such a finding exacerbates the issue around the PS3. Games that are unable to obtain updates may suffer from Trophy support, online play, and maybe even the ability to enjoy the games at all. These titles are demoted to their unpatched original editions in the absence of fixes. If Gran Turismo 5 releases with a problem that locks users out of specific maps, the great majority of gamers will be unable to access those racetracks.

These terrible situations highlight the necessity of backward compatibility choices, which Sony used to embrace more enthusiastically than others. However, since the release of the PlayStation 3, Sony has steadily lessened its commitment to such game preservation efforts.
