An indie developer has been working on a demake of FromSoftware's Bloodborne for just over a year, and it is now finally available for download.

In a day when demakes seem to be normal, studios are ready to take something beloved and traditional and bring it into the modern world with fresh eyes and new engines. Then there are "remakes," which essentially do the opposite by taking a contemporary title and making it appear retro. One fan imagined a BioShock Infinite remake in the style of a SNES game, and then there's the Bloodborne remake, which is currently available.

Lilith Walther, also known as b0tster, has been working on the Bloodborne fan project for about a year and has recently revealed that her PSX-style version of the game is now available for download. Along with the game, she's released a launch trailer that showcases the aesthetics of the retro-looking action RPG. Fans who are interested in this demake can find it on the creator's Itch.io page. She thanked everyone who has shown her support over the last "13 months" of work on Twitter.

The game has been on some fans' radars for some time, with Bloodborne PSX demo footage released last October to whet the appetites of potential players and to showcase the tremendous work that Walther had put into the game at the time. What's more, according to the download page, the game supports gamepad as well as PC controls, which makes sense considering that the original game was exclusive to PS4, but it's a lovely touch from the developer to make it more suitable to console players who aren't used to playing with mouse and keyboard.

Walther also included several extra features. Cheats and a fully functional keyboard were added to Bloodborne PSX late last year. It demonstrates that the author worked hard to not only give the beloved 2015 game a classic style but also to incorporate several features. However, it should be noted at this point that this is not a remake of the entire original game. Walther has stated that her version is only the first several hours of the original game, not the entire game.

Many modders and independent developers find themselves in hot water on a regular basis, such as when Take-Two sued fans who reverse-engineered GTA games. It's understandable that folks don't want to enrage the power brokers. Many people appear to regard Walther's work as a superb homage to the original.
