A Russian foreign ministry spokesman has warned that either Finland or Sweden joining the Nato defense alliance would provoke a strong reaction from Moscow.
Maria Zakharova warned that if either Nordic country tried to join the security alliance, there would be "severe military and political consequences that would necessitate our country taking reciprocal steps," according to BBC, citing Russian news agencies.
"We regard the Finnish government's commitment to a military non-alignment policy as an essential factor in guaranteeing security and stability in Northern Europe," Zakharova said during a news conference in Moscow.

Finland has not technically joined the security alliance, though it cooperates with it in several areas and is attending today's summit in Brussels.
Sanna Marin, Finland's prime minister, indicated last month that joining NATO would be "extremely unlikely" during her term in office.

According to EU's Borrell, Russia has threatened Finland and Sweden with military ramifications if they join NATO: "Every country has the freedom to choose its foreign policy and alliances."
