Goldeneye 007 remaster 'may be revealed in the coming weeks, the report claimed. HD remaster of the N64 classic GoldenEye 007 could be released as soon as the next couple of weeks.

According to VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb, who indicated on his premium Giant Bomb podcast GrubbSnax that he believes Microsoft, rather than original publisher Nintendo, will announce the comeback.

This is consistent with what the source told.

"I believe Microsoft will be the first to announce that," Grubb added. "I think this game is probably coming quite soon, I'm guessing next few weeks," he continued.

In the past, rereleasing Goldeneye 007 has been a legal headache, with rights holders Nintendo, Microsoft, and MGM hypothetically all having to authorize a new version of the N64 classic.

Furthermore, the James Bond series will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2022, prompting speculation that the genre's most iconic video game would be re-released as part of the festivities.

In January, Rare developers were seen unlocking Xbox Achievements for Goldeneye 007, hinting that a previously-canceled Xbox 360 remake could soon be published on newer platforms.

After licensing concerns and confusion between license holders and a young team who hurried ahead to build the game despite the fact that a deal for the game had never been finalized, Microsoft had to shelve an already completed remaster of the iconic N64 game for the Xbox 360 last year.

In early 2021, a functioning build of the canceled GoldenEye 007 Xbox 360 remake was leaked onto file-sharing sites, allowing those with access to the files to play it on a modded console or PC emulator.

VGC dubbed the leaked GoldenEye Xbox build "the greatest remaster you'll likely never play" at the time.

The canned remaster's co-directors told VGC for the first time in a GoldenEye Xbox interview last year that they didn't anticipate it would ever be officially released.

"Seeing the GoldenEye remaster leak into the public domain is kind of heartbreaking," said co-director Chris Tilston. "It allows people to see the work that was done, but it also hides some of the behind-the-scenes blunders."

"The thing that I find oddest is, why now?" said co-director Mark Edmonds. Why is it being leaked now, after all this time? This had to have been in someone's possession for all those years. It just strikes me as odd.

"When I initially heard about it, it nearly made me wonder if Microsoft was deliberately leaking it for some reason." (Laughs) That doesn't make sense to me, but it does help you understand."
