Sony Pictures CEO Howard G. Levinson refers to the Uncharted film as a 'franchise,' hinting that a sequel will be made.

The Uncharted movie is referred to be a 'franchise' by Sony Pictures' CEO, indicating that a sequel is on the way. The CEO of Sony Pictures has referred to Uncharted as a "franchise," hinting that a sequel is in development.

According to Deadline, Tom Rothman sent a companywide email congratulating colleagues on the film's success in the United States this weekend.

"Uncharted is a new smash movie franchise for the company, with over $100 million in box office globally in just one weekend and a 90 percent positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes," Rothman added.

"This is a huge victory for the entire company because the film was our first major production that was completely shut down by the arrival of Covid, but we persevered to finish a film that the audience loves and marketed and distributed it with strategic zeal around the world, despite the pandemic."

"I want to thank all of the filmmakers, the incredible cast and crew, and especially our colleagues at PlayStation Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment for their support," Rothman added. And, of course, I want to thank each and every one of you for your imagination, devotion, and faith."

The use of the term 'franchise,' which is normally used to designate a series rather than a standalone film, suggests that a second Uncharted film is already in the works.

Uncharted's post-credits scene also hints at a potential sequel, and director Ruben Fleischer told Entertainment Weekly (warning: the story spoilers the moment) that it was intended to "let people know that this, hopefully, wouldn't be the last time they heard of Drake and Sully."

The Uncharted film, which had a $120 budget, debuted in 15 regions on February 11 and had a strong international start. To date, it has made $139 million globally.

It then opened in the United States on February 18 and reportedly had the fourth-largest opening weekend for a video game adaptation at the box office, grossing $44 million in its first three days to lead the weekly sales chart.

Only 2001's Tomb Raider ($47 million), 2019's Detective Pikachu ($54 million), and 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog ($58 million) have bigger US debuts.
