7 more Russian oligarchs have been sanctioned by the United Kingdom, including Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich

7 more Russian oligarchs, including Roman Abramovich, have been sanctioned by the United Kingdom.

Britain announced sanctions on seven Russian oligarchs on Thursday, freezing their assets and banning them from dealing with British individuals and enterprises. A travel ban is among the punishments.

Roman Abramovich, the owner of the Chelsea soccer team, and billionaire Oleg Deripaska are among those facing sanctions.

According to a statement released by the British government on Thursday, Chelsea will continue to operate under a license that "includes permissions for the club to continue playing matches and other football-related activity, which will protect the Premier League, the wider football pyramid, loyal fans, and other clubs."

"The sanctions announced today demonstrate once more that oligarchs and kleptocrats have no place in our economy or society. They have been involved in Putin's actions thanks to their tight ties with him "According to a press release from British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.

The British government has announced that an Economic Crime Bill, which will take effect next week, will increase and speed up punishments.

"We will be relentless in pursuing those who facilitate the death of people, the devastation of hospitals, and the illegitimate occupation of sovereign allies," Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a press release announcing the additional penalties.

  • Igor Sechin is the Chief Executive of Rosneft
  • Andrey Kostin is Chairman of VTB bank
  • Alexei Miller is CEO of energy company Gazprom
  • Nikolai Tokarev is president of the Russian state-owned pipeline company Transneft
  • Dmitri Lebedev is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bank Rossiya
