Ukrainian forces have retaken control of Makariv, a town 30 miles west of Kyiv, after days of battle, the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced on Facebook on Tuesday.
As the Russians retreated, the "state flag of Ukraine was raised above the city of Makariv," according to the post.
CNN reports that the Ukrainian army had confirmed their claim.
The ongoing Russian airstrikes had caused substantial damage to Makariv. Photos of extensive damage to housing complexes, schools, and a medical facility were posted to social media on March 12 and CNN confirmed their validity.
The Russian Defense Ministry has stated numerous times that it is not targeting civilians.
According to US channel CNN, new US satellite photos were taken on Monday by Maxar Technologies show fires from military operations and increased flooding of the Irpin River, as well as Russian artillery west of the Russian-controlled Antonov Air Base, northwest of the capital.
In the center of Irpin, a city near the capital, fires can be seen near a government complex and in several apartment buildings. Another satellite image shows two fires in a group of buildings near a public school and a residential neighborhood near a lake.
According to Ukrainian news agency Unian, the mayor of Chernigov, Vladislav Atroshenko, stated that "more than half of the population has fled the city, and there will be around 130,000 citizens remaining in the city, which used to have about 285,000 people."
"Chernigov plays a significant role in his story. According to Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform, "Putin has frequently stated that it is the cradle of orthodoxy." Atroshenko also stated that the city is besieged on all sides.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces claim that "invading units" are still bombing this city and nearby settlements. "They do not give up attempting to go to Brovary," they said in their latest report, "but due to losses, there is no progress in the promotion."
In this context, they claim that "enemy aviation" continues to use missiles to target civilian infrastructure in Kiev, Kharkov, and Donetsk. Borispol Mayor Volodymir Borisenko ordered inhabitants to leave the city after anti-aircraft alarms sounded again on Monday night near the capital.
