Sonic 2 became the most successful video game movie ever with a $71 million opening weekend
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earned $71 million in its first weekend in the United States, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever.

According to Variety, the sequel surpassed Deadline's estimate of $60 million to $65 million box office revenue.

That's more than the previous film's $58 million three-day premieres, and when you add in $70 million in overseas earnings (Sonic 2 debuted a week early in Europe, Australia, and other places), the sequel's global total is alleged $141 million.

"This is an incredible opening," said David A. Gross, president of movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. 'Sonic' is set to enjoy a strong run, thanks to positive reviews and high audience ratings."

"This movie did such a remarkable job in service of the fans while not alienating mainstream audiences," said Paramount's president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson, commenting on what has made the film franchise such a hit considering Sonic's lukewarm gaming reception in recent years.

The production of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is said to have cost roughly $90 million, not including marketing costs.

Sonic the Hedgehog was a surprising success, becoming the top video game adaptation of all time in the United States. In February, Paramount Pictures and Sega announced that a third Sonic film and a live-action TV series were in the works.

Toby Ascher, who worked on both the 2020 Sonic film and the impending sequel, spoke of ambitions for a "Sonic cinematic universe" in production notes released to coincide with the removal of the Sonic 2 review embargo.

"We're establishing a Sonic cinematic universe," he explained, "so we knew we'd have to include characters like Tails and Knuckles, who are new to the movie but beloved by gamers all around the world."
