Las Vegas (AP): Nevada's largest university is going smoke-free, expanding the state's existing law prohibiting smoking in most indoor public places to include outdoor areas.
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas policy, which was announced on Friday and will go into effect on Aug. 15 in time for the fall 2022 semester also applies to vape.
According to officials, the pandemic played a role in the policy's approval last fall by a university policy committee by raising awareness of respiratory illnesses.
The new policy will eliminate designated smoking areas outside buildings such as the Thomas & Mack Center an arena, according to Shawn Gerstenberger, dean of UNLV's School of Public Health.
Gerstenberger told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that enforcement will begin with education and will be handled by the Office of Student Conduct for students and supervisors for university employees.
"We're not going to police this like they're criminals or anything," he explained, adding that the goal is to encourage healthy behavior. "There will be no cigarette or vape police roaming around campus."
According to the School of Public Health, UNLV is one of about 2,000 universities across the country that have gone smoke-free.
