Due to 'international solidarity over the Ukraine invasion, Dutch and Swedish dockers refused to unload a tanker carrying Russian diesel, union leader says

A union leader told dockworkers in the Netherlands and Sweden refused to unload a tanker carrying Russian diesel because of "international solidarity" over the invasion of Ukraine.

The tanker Sunny Liger was denied entry to one port in Sweden and two ports in the Netherlands, according to Niek Stam, head of the Federation of Dutch Trade Unions' maritime division.

"If dockworkers anywhere else in the world refuse the cargo, we will refuse as well," Stam stated. "We do so in the name of international solidarity."

According to ship-tracking data from Marine Traffic, the tanker is currently anchored off the coast of IJmuiden, not far from Amsterdam.

The Marshall Islands-flagged Sunny Liger left the Russian port of Primorsk on April 24, according to Marine Traffic. It had picked up 60,000 tons of diesel in Primorsk, according to tracking data cited by Bloomberg.

The tanker then made its way to a Swedish port, where it was denied entry, and then to the Dutch ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam, Stam said.

Because the Sunny Liger flies the Marshall Islands flag, it is not subject to Russian sanctions and thus is not prohibited from entering EU ports. The cargo of the tanker, according to Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra, is not prohibited.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to an inquiry from the source.

The European Union is attempting to figure out how to wean itself off Russian oil and gas, with talks set to take place this week. Russia provides roughly one-third of the EU's oil and gas.

Germany, which buys about 25% of its oil from Russia, has stated that it is now willing to stop buying Russian oil.

The United States banned Russian energy imports in March, and the European Union has announced a ban on Russian coal.
