Sega has announced its next mini console, that will be based on the Mega Drive 2.
The Mega Drive Mini 2 will include 50 Mega Drive and Mega CD games, as well as arcade ports and a "mysterious new work," according to Sega.
The console was revealed during a Sega live stream in Japan, which is still going on as of this writing.
The following is a list of games that have been confirmed for the console so far:
- Silpheed (Mega CD)
- Shining Force CD (Mega CD)
- Sonic CD (Mega CD)
- Mansion of Hidden Souls (Mega CD)
- Popful Mail (Mega CD)
- Virtua Racing (Mega Drive)
- Bonanza Bros (Mega Drive)
- Shining in the Darkness (Mega Drive)
- Thunder Force IV (Mega Drive)
- Magical Taruruto (Mega Drive)
- Fantasy Zone (new Mega Drive port)
The Mega Drive version of Fantasy Zone was never released. The Mega Drive 2 Mini version is a brand-new Mega Drive port based on the sequel, Super Fantasy Zone.
In Japan, the Mega Drive Mini 2 will be released on October 27 for $9,980 ($75). A western release has yet to be confirmed by Sega.
The first Mega Drive Mini was released in 2019 with 42 games, with different libraries for each region. It included brand-new Darius and Tetris ports that had never been seen before.
Last week, Sega teased the news with a photo of a chocolate cake shaped like a Mega Drive/Genesis controller.
In October 2020, Yosuke Okunari, who co-hosted the Mega Drive Mini 2 announcement, speculated that Sega's next mini console could be based on the Sega Dreamcast.
Following the Japan-only release of the Game Gear Mini, Okunari told Famitsu magazine that he wanted the next project to deliver hardware with greater global potential.
"I believe we'll go with a concept similar to the Mega Drive Mini for the next one," he said. "It could be an SG-1000 Mini or a Dreamcast Mini if I have to name some names."
