Electronic Arts has confirmed that The Sims 4 will become free-to-play on October 18. According to EA, the game will continue to receive significant support for "The Forseeable Future."

Players will be able to download the base game for free on PC, Mac, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One starting on that day.

The company stated, "With the Sims 4 being free to play, our team is more driven than ever to developing new and meaningful The Sims 4 experiences for our players and we will continue to develop and release packs, kits, and Sims Delivery Express drops into the near future.

On October 18, a live stream from the game's creator Maxis will provide further information about its future intentions for the title, which is presently available for $19.99 / £17.99.

Existing Sims 4 users can get the new Desert Luxe Kit for free from September 14 until October 17.

According to EA, the Desert Luxe Kit allows Sims to unwind in their own contemporary oasis with opulent indoor and outdoor furnishings that is inspired by the Southwestern desert's natural surroundings and made of materials like stone and wood.

The Sims 4 first became available on the PC in September 2014; it then appeared on the Mac in 2015 and on the PS4 and Xbox One in 2017.

According to EA, more than 33 million individuals had played the game as of February 2021, and it had brought in over $1 billion in revenue as of that month.

"The Sims is one of the great franchises of our industry and operates in a market where we have very little competition in the lifestyle category," EA CEO Andrew Wilson said during earnings call last November.

The team, he continued, "continues to consider how to expand that franchise even more than today in a category and with a player base that is extremely different from the rest of our assets."
