A glitch in the way the Dead Space remake handles VRS will be fixed, according to developer EA Motive, in a new patch.
Dead Space remake creators have formally announced that they will be fixing the game's graphical issues after its release last week. When the popular franchise received a much-needed update to its look and feel with the remake, Dead Space recently experienced a resurgence among fans.
The horror game's 2023 iteration was a welcome addition to the year's lineup of video games. The protagonist of the game, Isaac Clarke, was given a voice in the Dead Space remake, one of the remake's most notable differences from the original. Fans have already given EA Motive high marks for their work, especially for some of the intricate details like the improved suit detailing for Isaac and the protagonist's interactions in specific scenarios. That doesn't mean the remake doesn't have its share of issues, though.
John Linneman of Digital Foundry recently brought up a problem with the game's handling of variable rate shading (VRS) on both the PS5 and PC. Even though Dead Space's resolution may actually be higher, according to John, VRS "causes shadowed regions to basically lose most of their detail." It now appears that Motive is patching the problem across both platforms. The team is allegedly working on a toggle to turn off VRS on PC as well as its graphical issue on the PS5, according to an official response from the developers on Reddit. Even so, the studio hasn't given an ETA for the updates.
For those curious, this is what VRS does to the image quality on PS5. The actual resolution is much higher (look at Isaac) but VRS causes shadowed regions to basically lose most of their detail. pic.twitter.com/Qx9uEyTWzz

Of course, technical issues are not limited to VRS. One benchmark test shows that The Callisto Protocol performs more smoothly than the new Dead Space, and that EA Motive's remake struggles to hit 60 frames per second even with a new Nvidia RTX 4090. It should be noted, however, that the tester also acknowledged that after the intro sequence, the game runs more smoothly. In any case, the feedback from fans generally suggests that this might not be a common problem for many gamers.
Although it is unclear how EA Motive will continue the Dead Space series, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that a new remake is in the works. In fact, a few post-game conversations hint at a potential Dead Space 2 remake. Motive may soon start development, though no official announcement has yet been made. If that were to occur, the Dead Space 2 remake might have a quicker turnaround time given that a sizable portion of the asset development work has already been completed and the first remake experienced numerous delays throughout the course of its development.
Dead Space is available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
