With the addition of support for the upscaling technologies from AMD's FSR, Intel's XeSS, and Nvidia's DLSS, a recent mod for Fallout 4 improves the visuals.
In particular, image upscaling made by Nvidia, AMD, and Intel is now supported in the post-apocalyptic role-playing game Fallout 4 that was released in 2015. The Fallout franchise is renowned for its plethora of vaults, destroyed open-world settings, and regularly ominous satire of humanity. Since Bethesda took over for the third installment and changed the games from being isometric to being first-person shooters, the series has become a AAA favorite.
There will be more chances to explore this abandoned version of Boston once Fallout 4 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. Although the vanilla experience is already fairly expansive, the variety of available custom mods enhances the game's appeal. With its own content and modifications, the community keeps enhancing the Bethesda formula, and a recent change should please the fan base's more graphical purists.
DSO Gaming noticed that PureDark, a Nexus Mods user, recently released a Fallout 4 upscaler. The mod essentially acts as a plugin for the RPG, adding support for Deep Learning Super Sampling from Nvidia, FidelityFX Super Resolution from AMD in version 2, and Xe Super Sampling from Intel. Although the modder hasn't uploaded any screenshots of the mod in use, some users have felt compelled to share images and videos that demonstrate how the upscaling software enhances the game's overall quality. As mentioned, PureDark claims that the plugin is incompatible with the well-known Enhanced Natural Beauty, or ENB, modification.
For those who are unfamiliar with the technology, upscaling is a type of AI that improves video game graphics without adding to the hardware demands on a PC. Basically, it draws the pixels on the screen again to make them look like they are at a higher resolution. For instance, without additional GPU work, a 1080p game could be "upscaled" to 1440p. The likes of Nvidia's DLSS, though it does require an RTX graphics card, supports hundreds of games, whereas AMD and Intel's equivalents are more open-source.
It's not surprising that people are still playing Fallout 4 more than seven years after it first came out because there is so much to do in the game. With the addition of many mods, fans are likely to continue playing this recreation of post-apocalyptic America for a considerable amount of time. Which is fortunate considering how long it will probably be before the fifth installment is released.
Fallout 4 is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions coming in 2023.
