For more than 100 years, scientists believed every cat species on Earth had already been identified and catalogued. That belief was officially shattered when an international team of researchers confirmed the discovery of a distinct, living wild cat species: the Tilcayo cat (Leopardus tilcayo), discovered in the remote cloud forests of Bolivia.
The story of Leopardus tilcayo didn't begin in a research lab — it began on a mountain road near La Paz, Bolivia. A local resident found an unusually small kitten wandering alone and, assuming it was an abandoned domestic cat, took it in and raised it on rice and eggs.

Researchers deliberately preserved that name for the species — Leopardus tilcayo — as a way of honoring indigenous knowledge that predated the scientific discovery by generations.
