The possibility of Microsoft bringing back the Killer Instinct franchise has been addressed by Xbox CEO Phil Spencer. Microsoft appears to be committed to bringing back virtually every old Xbox franchise, but one that hasn't been discussed in a long time is Killer Instinct, which Phil Spencer reportedly enjoys.

For the introduction of the Xbox One in 2013, the platform holder published a revival of Rare's iconic fighting game franchise, and continued to support the free-to-play title with updates and new characters for several years.

During the latest Dropped Frames podcast on Wednesday, Microsoft's head of gaming explained how the series is perceived internally.

"We'd want to visit so many excellent titles in our collection," Phil Spencer remarked. The response was tremendous when we sought to fix KI in time for the Xbox One launch.

Phil Spencer recently made it clear that he and Matt (Chief Executive of Microsoft Xbox Game Studios) and I have spoken a lot about KI and where we want to go with it, and it's not out of our minds—it might be out of our brains—but it's in our hearts and minds to do something with it.

Spencer explained, 'It's about finding the right team and the right opportunity.' ‘It is not through a lack of desire on our side that we are not doing more with KI; we adore the franchise and the feedback from the community.'

Booty discussed how the platform holder views legendary franchise revivals in an interview with Game Informer in 2019.

"It's been a few years, but I was fortunate enough to work with the guys who relaunched Killer Instinct," Phil Spencer remarked. It came about as a result of a lot of excitement and energy.

Those are the choices I'm interested in, and I believe they are preferable than searching a database and thinking, 'well, nobody has done this in a while, maybe we might restart it then.'

Phil Spencer, the CEO of Xbox, believes it will work out if someone has a strong passion for it.

Killer Instinct was relaunched for the Xbox One in 2013 as a free-to-play title with three seasons of content. It was originally a 2D fighting game by Rare that was published in arcades and on the Nintendo 64 platform.

Although it didn't have a huge influence on the fighting game landscape, it was likely due to the fact that it was an Xbox One exclusive more than anything else, and the game was generally highly received.

Ken Lobb, who worked on the original and is still at Xbox Game Studios, was in charge of the project, with Double Helix Games, Iron Galaxy, and Rare all contributing at different times.

Spencer didn't say if a new game will be produced internally or by a third-party company, but the idea of a new game looked to be more than a wishful thought.
