For kids who grew up playing with action figures and army men, Hypercharge: Unboxed is a concentrated dose of nostalgia. Players take the role of action figures coming together to fight off hazardous monsters and survive in otherwise commonplace settings within a normal home in the four-player co-op shooter developed by British studio Digital Cybercherries. During Gamescom 2021, Digital Cybercherries announced that the popular shooter would have a solo campaign.

Hypercharge: Unboxed is a mix of shooter and tower defense games that will be released in early 2020 for the Nintendo Switch and a few months later on Steam. Players will explore the house and build to defend their 'HYPER-CORE.' Since its release, Hypercharge: Unboxed has received numerous updates, the most recent of which added bots and a third-person camera to the shooter. Digital Cybercherries has now revealed the game's next big feature: a full-fledged PvE campaign for solitary players.

During a teaser shown at Gamescom, Digital Cybercherries announced the features coming to the shooter's future single-player campaign. Players will be able to discover about Sgt. Max Ammo's past through a visual comic in Hypercharge: Unboxed's backstory. The trailer teases players with a series of "90s-inspired" platforming puzzles and bosses, tantalizing them with what lies beyond the home's garden.

Hypercharge: Unboxed - Official Single Player Campaign Announcement Trailer reveal.

Hypercharge: Unboxed, according to developer Digital Cybercherries, pays homage to "vintage toy movies" from the late 1990s and early 2000s. This is expressly stated on the game's Steam website. Some of the key references behind the 'action figure'-inspired shooter include films like Toy Story and Small Soldiers. There's no word on when Hypercharge: Unboxed gamers will be able to plunge into the game's single-player features, with only "Coming Soon" noted as a release date.

Toys as the main character in video games isn't a new concept; developers have tried to convey that sense of amazement many times before. Video games have a long history with franchises like Hot Wheels, and others like Toy Soldiers put players in command of the miniature green army men. The latest upgrade should entice solo gamers to pick up the toy-themed game, especially since Xbox One and PlayStation 4 ports are expected to join the Switch and Steam editions at some point in the future.
