Twitch Announces Less Annoying Ads That Do Not Disrupt Streaming

Twitch is launching a new optional ad system that will be less annoying and will allow users to watch streamers whereas the ads are playing.

Twitch and its community have something of a romantic relationship. On the one hand, the streaming platform has had a positive impact by introducing 350 additional diversity tags in response to community requests. On the other hand, it is frequently the cause of contention, particularly when it comes to banning people, sometimes for vague or confusing reasons. Another element of the site that many users dislike is the presence of advertisements. Ads may be disruptive, but the firm is currently experimenting with a new method that could be a step in the right way.

Twitch has announced on Twitter that a new ad type called Stream Display Ads is being deployed. According to the tweet and accompanying short video, this new technique will make advertisements less intrusive. Following another round of feedback, the streaming platform has announced that these new adverts would be placed at the bottom of streams, although consumers will still be able to see and hear the broadcaster. The text does go on to clarify that this is an optional feature, and that content providers may choose to opt-out of this new ad style. The community is also encouraged to provide comments on the new system.

Since that ads can sometimes be annoying, such as when a Minecraft speedrun was interrupted by Twitch ads last year, this new approach looks like it may be a beneficial one by reducing the likelihood of broadcasts being interrupted. However, according to the article page regarding Stream Display Advertisements, and in response to someone on Twitter, the site would still feature pre-roll ads. These are commercials that newbies to a channel must still view.

The report also states that the new ads would provide income for content creators. Popular streamers, like Amouranth, who just had advertisements reinstalled on her channel following the "hot tub" stream scandal, rely heavily on ad income, so this is likely to be excellent news for them.

In general, this new ad system might be beneficial. After experimenting with mid-roll advertisements last year, Twitch's decision to create a lot less disruptive approach can only be a good thing. While the business claims there will still be pre-roll advertising for beginners, let's hope Stream Display Ads will be seen as a positive step that will put an end to all the user banning issues.
