With Innistrad, the first set in the enormously popular card game's self-titled Innistrad block, Magic The Gathering first introduced double-faced cards into the game ten years ago. Since the set's release in September 2011, double-faced cards have become a mainstay of Magic The Gathering, with double-faced cards appearing in almost every set. Now, as the game prepares to return to Innistrad, double-faced cards are making a comeback, this time with a twist to match the set's werewolf theme.

Wizards of the Coast revealed the next set for Innistrad Midnight Hunt, one of the most popular card games in the world, during the recent Magic Showcase 2021. The forthcoming set offers a return to Innistrad's gothic horror-inspired plane and its variety of classic monsters, including vampires and werewolves. Wizards have revealed a new mechanic coming to the game's distinctive double-faced cards, with the new set only a few days away.

The return of Magic: The Gathering to Innistrad will be marked by the addition of a day-and-night cycle to the game. Different effects will be applied to various cards throughout the set depending on the time of day in the game, which is decided by the spells a player casts during their turn. If a player does not cast any spells during a round, the game will change tonight, while casting two or more spells in a turn will change the game today.

The new gameplay mechanic that will accompany the set's double-faced cards, Daybound and Nightbound, will go along with the set's day-and-night cycle. Depending on the time of day, Daybound and Nightbound cards will be able to flip themselves over at the start of the turn. The double-faced cards will show character transformations based on the set's werewolf theme, with Daybound forms being human and Nightbound forms taking on a more terrible look.

This is a significant event for Magic: The Gathering. Two of the most popular fantasy franchises, Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons, teamed up to bring the famous series together in July's Adventure in the Forgotten Realms. The franchise's web platform has been a huge success. Magic: The Gathering Arena was released on mobile devices in March of this year. Netflix is also developing a Magic: The Gathering animated series that is currently set to release sometime in 2022.

Magic: The Gathering's future seems bright, as the almost 30-year-old card game titan continues to break new ground.

Magic: The Gathering - Innistrad Midnight Hunt will be available on Magic: The Gathering Arena and Magic Online on September 16th, followed by a physical release on September 24th.
