Night School Studio, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Oxenfree, has been purchased by Netflix. Night School is the first game company to be purchased by Netflix, which has made it plain that it intends to expand beyond its distinctive video streaming service into video games.

Although some independent game developers struggle to breakthrough, Night School Studios was able to break through with its debut release, Oxenfree, which has a cult following. Since then, the firm has produced more narrative games such as Afterparty and is presently working on Oxenfree II. While fans wait for a sequel to Alex and her companions' narrative, the studio just announced that it has "joined the Netflix team."

Sean Krankel, the co-founder of Night School, claimed in a news statement on the Night School website that Netflix's acquisition will allow the company to continue to explore narrative-driven games.“Night School aims to push our story and design ambitions across a variety of unique, heartfelt games,” Krankel added. “Netflix provides an extraordinary canvas for film, television, and now video game creators to develop and distribute outstanding entertainment to millions of people.

In a blog post about the deal, Night School Studios says that its love of narrative storytelling and Netflix's goal of providing its creators with an "unprecedented canvas to create" were a perfect match and that the streaming service is taking "extreme care" to protect how the studio has always handled its development process. Night School Studios also assures fans that they need not be concerned, as production on Oxenfree II is continuing as planned.

When they heard the news, several fans were concerned that it meant a fantastic independent studio's games would now be kept behind a streaming service like Google's Stadia, which not everyone likes. While Night School's article makes no mention of exclusivity, Netflix's own news release highlights the company's efforts to develop exclusive games for its roster, suggesting that any future Night School Studios releases may be unique to Netflix.

However concerning as the collaboration maybe, Netflix's statement expressly states that its gaming streaming platform would be included as part of any existing membership, with no microtransactions later on. This may make these games more affordable for players, but only time will tell how well Netflix's gaming service succeeds once it launches.

Oxenfree II: Lost Signals was revealed at a Nintendo Direct presentation in April, and it will be released on Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC next year. However, Krankel has promised supporters that these intentions would not be altered as a result of the Netflix arrangement.

He said, "The Netflix team has demonstrated the utmost care in safeguarding our studio culture and creative vision." “We'll continue to work on Oxenfree II. We'll continue to create new gaming environments.
