Though Overwatch 2 appears to be a long way away, Blizzard Entertainment isn't shy about previewing what's to come in the impending sequel. One of these hints is that many of the characters will be reworked before the next game, whether it's just ability balance or a complete revamp of a single character. Blizzard has offered gamers their first glimpse at one of the characters that will be receiving the latter, and it's Overwatch 2's resident sentry bot, Bastion.

When Overwatch was first released in 2016, Bastion was categorized as a defensive hero. Players may choose between two combat modes: mobile recon with an automatic rifle and stationary sentry with a rapid-fire minigun, according to the bot. Bastion's ultimate allowed it to morph into a roaming tank with a cannon, allowing it to fire massive explosive blasts against the enemy team.

Bastion will receive substantial changes in all three of its variants in Overwatch 2. The weapon in Recon mode will have its firing rate decreased and the damage falloff range increased to make it more effective at longer ranges. In addition, recon mode will get a new ability in the form of a tactical grenade that may bounce off walls and cling to hostile players for more area-of-effect damage.

Sentry mode will no longer be stationary, and firing and movement will be considerably slower. Weapon damage has also been reduced significantly in the sequel, with Blizzard lowering it by 40%. To compensate, the minigun will have limitless ammunition and will not require reloading. Due to the modifications to sentry mode, Blizzard has limited the number of times players can stay in the mode before it switches back to recon, and players must wait for the mode to cool off before switching back. Bastion's self-healing ability has also been disabled, forcing players to rely on health packs and healers.

The bot's ultimate will no longer be a tank, which will be one of the most significant changes to Bastion. Instead, Bastion may change into an artillery mode, which locks it in place and allows it to unleash long-range artillery assaults on the enemy side. Within the time allotted by the ultimate, players will be able to target three places anywhere on the map.

Given Bastion's history, which dates back to the initial Overwatch betas in 2016, it's understandable that it would be heavily reworked for Overwatch 2. The bot was one of the most formidable characters in the pre-release beta, thanks to a protective shield and a devastating minigun while in sentry mode. The shield had vanished by the time the game was released in stores, but Bastion remained one of the game's most powerful characters, and he has been the subject of several nerfs and buffs throughout the game's lifespan.

Overwatch 2 is being developed on the PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
