Silent Hill fans have been waiting for a new game since Konami scrapped the project it had begun with Hideo Kojima. Even that product, dubbed P.T., was a far cry from the conventional Silent Hill gameplay that fans desired. Despite the fact that fans have remained alert and some decent alternatives have emerged, Konami's horror franchise has left a hole. Thankfully, indie creators Dual Effect and Abstract Digital saw the demand for a classic horror experience on modern platforms and produced a game to address the issue.

Tormented Souls was released recently on PC and PlayStation 5, with PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch editions following. The game provides a nostalgic horror experience for anyone who remembers gritting their teeth in the dark while meandering through monster-infested misty towns. Tormented Souls preserves the spirit of classics such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Alone in the Dark, reintroducing fixed camera angles and other distinguishing elements while delivering an original disturbing story.

For those hoping for a typical horror experience without re-watching the classics, the options have been limited. Silent Hill and the bulk of its sequels are regarded as fantastic games, but there are only so many times a player may retread the same eerie town or police station until their joys are tempered by muscle memory and expectation of a repeating fear – an unfortunate shortcoming of the genre. Hidden enemies, limited ammo, gruesome details, and devious puzzles don't always lend themselves to multiple playthroughs.

Tormented Souls proudly wears its influences on its sleeve. The horror game is more Silent Hill than Resident Evil, but lovers of classic horror will feel right at home. Tormented Souls throws players into an unforgiving environment right away, with no modern tutorial to guide them. Instead, control is instantly taken away from the players, waking them up deep within the depths of a mansion-turned-hospital, a new patient of some wicked nonconsensual operation. It began as an examination into unusual correspondence that quickly devolves into a battle for survival. The setup alone is reminiscent of a long-forgotten Silent Hill game, complete with campy dialogue and eerily strange NPCs. Tormented Souls, in fact, goes to such efforts to reproduce the classic horror feel and tone that it might well be mistaken for a long-forgotten PS2 game. Tormented Souls' character models, landscapes, fixed camera angles, and tank controls all give the impression that it is a remaster of a cult hit rather than a new independent project. Even the less exciting aspects, such as unreliable fighting and restricted saving, are present.

Tormented Souls, in many ways, fills a hole in classic horror game lovers' libraries that has existed for years. While it can be a little jerky at times, the devs appear to be committed to the game and have already provided numerous patches in the few weeks it's been available on PC. Even so, it's not like early 2000s games were without flaws. That's the thing about Tormented Souls: every review will unavoidably include a reference to Silent Hill and its contemporaries. This would be a bad thing or a loss of identity for other titles. However, in the instance of Tormented Souls, it is the desired outcome – and it works.
