On Saturday, however, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan revealed a U-turn on the plans, confirming that PS4 Forbidden West gamers will be able to upgrade for free to PS5.
All cross-gen first-party games, including God of War 2 and Gran Turismo 7, will have a $10 upgrade cost going forward, according to Ryan.
“Thursday was supposed to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the incredible Guerrilla team that is working hard to bring it to life on February 18, 2022. However, it's evident that the pre-order kickoff offerings we confirmed were off the mark,” he said.
“Last year, we pledged to provide free upgrades for all of our cross-gen launch titles, including Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic's devastating effects delayed Forbidden West's release date, we will honor our offer: players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will receive a free upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version.”
“I also want to clarify today that, going forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly coming on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5,” the executive continued. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, as well as any other Sony Interactive Entertainment exclusive cross-gen PS4 and PS5 title.”
The disclosure on Thursday appeared to contradict a prior remark by Sony regarding Horizon's cross-gen aspirations.
