The operating system was supposed to arrive later this year, but now it has a firm release date. On Tuesday, Microsoft announced the official launch date for Windows 11, which is just over a month away. Windows 11 is available on October 5.

Microsoft officially announced Windows 11 in June, detailing several of the new operating system's features. The Windows OS update is the first big change in more than six years. In June of 2015, Microsoft released Windows 10. While the previous operating systems improved many aspects of PC desktops, this new OS has been marketed as having a strong focus on gaming features.

Microsoft said in a press release that Windows 11 will be available on October 5 and that it will be a free upgrade for people who already have Windows 10 on their computers. The new operating system will also be pre-installed on PCs that will be available in stores on the same day. The October 5 date is also crucial since Microsoft plans to cease support for Windows 10 almost exactly four years from that date. Those who don't want to transition to Windows 11 straight away will see updates for the present OS stop being delivered on October 14, 2025.

Since Microsoft officially announced Windows 11, bits and important details about the new operating system have been circulating online. In the same official announcement, the firm outlined some of the enhancements, which include a "fresher and cleaner" appearance, according to the company. Snap Layouts, Snap Groups, and numerous Desktops are touted as a solution to make multitasking and optimizing user screens even more powerful. Windows 11 is available on October 5.

Microsoft has also gone out of its way to emphasize that Windows 11 would place a specific emphasis on PC and cloud gaming. The business reiterated what it said in June, noting that PCs using the new operating system will be able to take advantage of DirectX12 Ultimate, DirectStorage, and Auto HDR technology.

Xbox Game Pass will be integrated directly into the operating system with Windows 11. This means that anyone who registers up for the service will not need to download any new software in order to enjoy the hundreds of games available in the library.

On October 5, Microsoft will release Windows 11.
