Nintendo conducted a Direct presentation for Animal Crossing: New Horizon on Friday morning, which featured important information about the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass subscription. The Expansion Pass will be available on October 25 for $50 per year, which is $30 more than the basic Nintendo Switch Online membership. The fee is far more than expected, prompting a debate between Nintendo and PlayStation enthusiasts about how Nintendo Switch Online compares to PlayStation Plus.

The discussion begins with the Nintendo Switch Online pricing point. $50 per year works up to a little over $4 each month, which isn't too bad. The Expansion Pass, on the other hand, boosts the price of Nintendo Switch Online by over 100% and only offers access to digital games rather than any additional service, although exclusive digital titles. Nintendo fans' conflicting sentiments about paying more money for digital games morphed into a debate about PlayStation and Xbox's rival subscription systems.

PlayStation also offers a membership service, similar to Nintendo Switch Online, that is necessary to use online PlayStation services. PlayStation also provides free monthly games as an added incentive. PlayStation Plus costs $59.99 a year, which is $10 more than Nintendo Switch Online and the Expansion Pass. PlayStation Plus users cannot opt-out of receiving free monthly games in exchange for a cheaper monthly price, although they are not compelled to play free-to-play games on PlayStation platforms.

In terms of cost, the Nintendo Switch Online with Expansion Pass costs $50 a year, while PlayStation Plus costs $60. (though it can be found significantly discounted). When comparing services, both provide multiplayer access, to begin with. After that, Nintendo provides exclusive access to a library of Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and Sega Genesis titles, as well as online multiplayer, cloud saves app access and other prizes. Free monthly games, member discounts, DLC bonuses, 100GB of cloud storage, and Share Play are all available with PlayStation Plus.

On both sides of the debate, there are valid points. On paper, Nintendo's service is less expensive. PlayStation Plus, on the other hand, is frequently on sale for approximately $40. Players of the Nintendo Switch can opt-out of the Expansion Pass, whereas PlayStation users do not require PlayStation Plus to play free-to-play titles. The most balanced viewpoint is that both services are extremely beneficial to people who play on that platform exclusively, but other features are less valuable if the platform is only used sometimes.

Finally, it's difficult to claim that Nintendo Switch Online and its Expansion Pass are overpriced when PlayStation Plus offers a similar set of features and is priced similarly. The two services are distinct in terms of rewards, and the value of each varies from person to person. For die-hard Nintendo aficionados, $50 a year for online multiplayer access to Nintendo 64 titles is definitely worth the price of admission.

On October 25, the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass will be available.
