The Elder Scrolls VI will most likely be an Xbox exclusive

This appears to be a frequent issue, but Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has finally, confirmed that Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls 6 will remain exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem, therefore ruling out a release on the PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch.

Spencer suggested that The Elder Scrolls 6 exclusivity will be similar to Bethesda's other long-awaited RPG, Starfield, told in an interview with UK GQ. Starfield was previewed earlier this year and was confirmed to be exclusive to Xbox platforms and PC. Spencer went on to say that he doesn't want this to be about penalizing rival platforms and that he expects all consoles will continue to grow and thrive in the coming years. "In order to be on Xbox," he says, "I want us to be able to deliver the full package of what we have." That is especially true when I consider Elder Scrolls VI. When I think of any of our franchisees, I think of it."

Todd Howard also commented on The Elder Scrolls 6, noting that the game is still in the works and that the team's ultimate goal remains the same as it has been since The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. According to Howard, the aim to transport people to these intriguing worlds and totally immerse the user remains the same as people and technology development. Bethesda intends to preserve the bones of The Elder Scrolls, but improve on player involvement in a way that the franchise has never done before with The Elder Scrolls 6.

This should come as no surprise, given Microsoft's purchase of Bethesda earlier this year, especially given Xbox's earlier announcement of Starfield's exclusivity at E3. Still, millions of fans who hoped that The Elder Scrolls 6 would be released on a Sony or Nintendo platform would be disheartened, if not outright misled, by Bethesda. The games industry, on the other hand, is a business, and this is a great way to bring Elder Scrolls enthusiasts into the Xbox ecosystem in some way. Microsoft is doubling down on its goal to provide these brands to gamers as best it can without outright selling the games on other platforms, whether it's through a standard Xbox console, PC, or even Xbox Game Pass on mobile.

It will be some time before we see how The Elder Scrolls 6's exclusivity affects Microsoft and Xbox, especially because Howard previously stated that producing Starfield was a now-or-never proposition, thus it will be some time before we see how The Elder Scrolls 6's exclusivity affects Microsoft and Xbox.

Bethesda is currently working on The Elder Scrolls 6.
