Steamforged confirmed tabletop RPG for Dark Souls.

Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game, a pen-and-paper adaptation, is being brought to the tabletop by FromSoftware and Steamforged Games.

The impact of Dark Souls on the gaming world over the last decade cannot be understated. This action role-playing franchise, which spawned an entire genre (including its spiritual successor Elden Ring), has been widely praised for its unique way of storytelling as well as its beautiful, forlorn landscapes that served as the setting for a robust, exciting, and notoriously difficult gameplay loop. With the help of Steamforged Games, FromSoftware hopes to move the Lothric environment away from the computer screen and onto the tabletop.

Even those inexperienced with the Dark Souls universe, it is a millennia-spanning setting in which the time between each game is lengthy enough to totally transform the geopolitical landscape of the planet in which the games are set. It's a story about cycles, about kingdoms rising and falling, about mortals living and dying — about the fleeting nature of existence vs the unchanging nature of time.

Even as one could argue for hours about the philosophy present in Dark Souls lore, the way the setting handles its timeline (as well as the lore in general) allows dungeon masters to interpret the world for their tabletop campaigns, making Dark Souls an ideal franchise to adapt into a pen-and-paper roleplaying game. It's evident that Steamforged Games feels the same way, based on their teaser announcement on Twitter.

Steamforged Games has a history of cooperating with the developers of Resident Evil and Horizon: Zero Dawn to create board games inspired by those games, so this isn't the first time it's attempted to convert a game series to a more tactile medium. Given that this isn't even the first Dark Souls project that the tabletop firm has worked on, it's no surprise that FromSoftware has opted to work with Steamforged Games once again.

Steamforged Games and FromSoftware want to expand the Dark Souls franchise by releasing Dark Souls: The Board Game and Dark Souls: The Card Game for the tabletop audience, as well as Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game. While the teaser and announcement gave few details regarding the roleplaying game – other than mentioning Lothric, the setting from Dark Souls 3 – players and tabletop lovers will undoubtedly learn more in the near future.
