The top downloaded games in Japan in 2021 have been published by Nintendo, and there are a surprising number of third-party games on the list. In the past, first-party titles topped the Nintendo Switch's best-selling games list, with titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate serving as income generators for the business.
The Switch had a fantastic year in 2021. Metroid Dread, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Shin Megami Tensei V, Mario Party Superstars, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, and New Pokémon Snap were among the system's many exclusives. The system's OLED version was also available in time for the holidays, allowing Nintendo to compete with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S throughout the holidays. The Nintendo Switch Online service also received the premium Expansion Pack, which included N64 and Sega Genesis games as well as free access to the Animal Crossing: New Horizons DLC.
Throughout the year, Nintendo has been exceptionally successful in Japan, where it has dominated the console market. In Japan, the official Nintendo site includes a page that lists the most downloaded titles over the course of the year. At the top of the list is Monster Hunter Rise, which was a Switch exclusive in 2021 but will be released on PC next month. The number two game was Among Us, which isn't surprising given how popular the game became during the outbreak and its incredibly low pricing range.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond came in third, while Pokémon Shining Pearl came in fifth. The game that separates them is the most recent installment in the Momotaro Dentetsu series, which has yet to be localized outside of Japan. The Monotaro Dentetsu is a video game in the style of a board game, similar to Monopoly, in which players acquire wealth by purchasing properties. Human: Fall Flat, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Minecraft, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate round out the top 10. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is ranked twelfth on the list, implying that interest in the game is waning following its meteoric rise to prominence during the outbreak when it was poised to become the best-selling Nintendo Switch title.
The following list only includes digital games available in Japan. Even though it has grown in popularity in recent years, the Monster Hunter series is more popular in Japan than it is elsewhere, and the Momotaro Dentetsu games do not have English language editions. During Nintendo's next fiscal report in Q1 2022, it will be interesting to discover which games led global sales.
