All PS4 trophies were temporarily lost and marked as PS3. The situation has been resolved, but it has sparked new concerns about backward compatibility.

Because of a problem with the PlayStation Network, PlayStation 4 trophies lost overnight, with their titles displaying as PS3 games in their place.

Trophy displays on both consoles and the PlayStation mobile app were only properly displaying PlayStation 5 titles. This raised the discussion on social media that the problem could be resolved in a future PS5 backward compatibility update. However, the problem was quickly fixed, and all trophy lists are again back to normal.

The incident was the most recent to spark speculation about the potential of PS3 titles arriving on the PS5 in the future. Last week, PlayStation 3 games began to surface on the PlayStation 5 store, amid speculation that Sony may announce additional backward compatibility support for the platform.

While seeing a PS3 game on the PS5 store, the listing should take the user to the PlayStation Now version, yet Dead Or Alive 5 displayed a price. Similar listings for PS3 Bejeweled and Prince of Persia games The Forgotten Sands and The Two Thrones have been noticed by other users on social media.

The listings arose after the discovery of a patent titled "backward compatibility through the use of spoof clock and fine grain frequency control" filed by PS5 system architect Mark Cerny.

Many speculated that Sony had finally found a solution for older games and that the PS5's backward compatibility support would be expanded soon, but this has not been confirmed.

It also comes after a Bloomberg story from December claiming that PlayStation is working on an Xbox Game Pass competitor service.

The new service, dubbed 'Spartacus,' will integrate the current PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now services, phasing away from the latter's branding, according to documents reviewed by the outlet. It'll be available on PS4 and PS5 in the spring, and it'll be divided into three payment tiers.
