Activision is currently developing Call of Duty Warzone 2, a standalone sequel to Call of Duty's battle royale game that will be released in 2023.

Activision releases new Call of Duty games every year, with the 2022 game rumored to be a successor to Modern Warfare. Since its release in 2020, Warzone has received seasonal updates to coincide with the release of the franchise's most recent mainstream game, however, this may not be the case in 2023.

Since Microsoft's big US$69 billion acquisition of struggling video game publisher Activision Blizzard, it has been revealed that the next three Call of Duty games, including Warzone 2, will still be released on PlayStation.

In a recent tweet, Microsoft Gaming CEO and Xbox boss Phil Spencer provided a brief update on the matter, stating that the Xbox company will honor Activision Blizzard's existing agreements with other companies upon acquisition.

"We respect our partnership with Sony since it is an important element of our industry," he said.

According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, Activision is working on a "new edition" of Warzone that will be a stand-alone game. This is a big change from the current Warzone, which is part of Modern Warfare 2019 and utilizes the same engine.

Following Microsoft's successful acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the information was added in Schreier's report that Call of Duty's next three releases will be available on PlayStation.

According to industry insider Tom Henderson, Warzone 2 will only be released on "current-gen consoles and PC," implying that you'll need an Xbox One X or a PlayStation 5. There will also be "no prior weapon integration," which means that all of your current weapons will be lost.

Infinity Ward is scheduled to deliver a new chapter in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series in 2022, following Sledgehammer Games' Vanguard last year.

Activision Blizzard will release a Treyarch-developed flagship product in 2023, as well as Warzone 2, the sequel to the successful free-to-play battle royale game that debuted in 2020.

The multibillion-dollar deal is scheduled to close in June 2023. Beyond that, Microsoft's plans for the Call of Duty franchise and Warzone 2 are unknown, and the corporation will most likely determine whether or not to continue distributing titles on PlayStation at that time.
