Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the most popular games in recent years, so it's completely unexpected to find it on a 30-year-old platform.

Whenever it comes to having games to operate on systems that they weren't built to be compatible with, Doom is frequently the champion. Doom has been ported to so many odd stuff that it's nearly become a meme at this point. However, while that may be fine for a game released in the mid-1990s, someone has asked if Grand Theft Auto 5 can be played on a console released in the late 1980s.

Sebastian Staacks showed a WiFi-enabled cartridge that fits into the rear of an original Nintendo Game Boy in a recent video released to YouTube. Among other things, Staacks has proven that GTA 5 can be played on the 33-year-old console. Of course, the console isn't actually running the game on its own hardware. The creator has provided a technical discussion of how it works, as well as the code for others to utilize.

Still, the game appears to be running on a traditional Nintendo handheld system from 1989, replete with monochrome green visuals and the ability to play the game using the console's buttons. In addition, Staacks was asked to demonstrate Crysis and, of course, the original Doom operating in the same manner, which they were able to do with a fair frame rate.

The Game Boy was a remarkable piece of gaming technology at the time, becoming a worldwide blockbuster after its release and selling over 118 million units. Those who missed out on the Game Boy Classic may still acquire the Analogue Pocket, which runs the entire Game Boy library.

However, Staack's video is really amazing, and it illustrates the fan base's passion for modding games to make them run or appear to run, on older systems. With GTA 5 currently dominating the sales rankings, it begs the issue of whether or not new ways to imitate the 2013 game will be developed for possibly even older systems. It appears that the community is doing everything it can to keep itself occupied while waiting for news on Grand Theft Auto 6.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is now available for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in the works.
