Nvidia's acquisition of iPhone and Switch chipmaker Arm has been canceled.

Nvidia has backed out of its planned $40 billion acquisition of UK-based chipmaker Arm from its present owner, SoftBank.

According to the Financial Times, The deal, which would have given Nvidia control over a company that creates chips for most mobile devices, has reportedly been canceled due to a failure to satisfy regulators that it was not anti-competitive.

Most mobile gadgets, including the iPhone, Samsung's smartphones, and the Nintendo Switch, are powered by Arm's semiconductor technology, which is based in Cambridge.

Qualcomm and Microsoft, which rely on Arm's chip designs for various projects, raised objections to Nvidia's statement that it wanted to buy Arm in September 2020.

SoftBank said in a statement to Bloomberg that the two parties agreed to end the complete the following to "severe regulatory challenges delaying the transaction's fulfillment, despite good faith efforts by both parties."

In December, the US Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit to stop the acquisition, claiming it would give Nvidia too much control over chips used by many of the world's largest tech giants.

Following demands to keep Arm in the UK, a government official previously stated that any takeovers posing a national security risk would be reviewed.

Last August, Arm's former president warned that selling the chip designer to another semiconductor giant may jeopardize the whole tech sector.

The deal cancelation was predicted for some time, with a second Bloomberg report last month suggesting that Nvidia was already prepared to walk away from the purchase due to frustrations with the lack of progress in obtaining regulatory permission.
