The King of Fighters 15 Download Size Revealed

The King of Fighters 15 will be released on February 15 for PC and consoles, but some fans may be surprised by how large the download is.

One of the iconic arcade-style fighting game franchises is The King of Fighters. While it is not as widely known to the general public as other of its fighting game relatives like Street Fighter and Mortal Combat, it remains one of the genre's most popular long-running series.

Fans are now preparing for the release of The King of Fighters 15 on PC, current and next-generation consoles. The game will go available on February 17th, with gamers able to preload it on February 15th. However, because The King of Fighters 15 has a somewhat large file size, players should ensure that there is enough space on their console's storage device.

The PS5 edition of The King of Fighters 15 officially has a download size of 68.048 GB, according to the normally accurate PlayStation Game Size. The 68 GB figure, however, does not include the game's day one patch, according to PS Game Size. It's also possible that the download contains temporary files that cause it to appear larger than it actually is. Furthermore, it is likely that the file size will differ on other platforms. It is, however, a strong sign of what fans might expect from the Xbox Series X and Series S.

However, 68 GB isn't a record-breaking file size. Destiny 2 had a huge 105 GB download before Bungie adjusted it with a patch, while Marvel's Avengers is a smaller but still remarkable 75 GB. But, those are huge games, not one vs one fight games. An even more fair comparison might be 2019's Mortal Combat 11, which weighed in at just over 43 GB. Similarly, last year's PS5 fighting game Guilty Gear: Strive is a fairly small 16 GB. 

To be sure, that information isn't just fluff. The King of Fighters 15 launches with a huge lineup of 40 playable fighters. The speech lines, animations, and different graphics effects must take up a large amount of space when combined. Mortal Combat 11 was released with only 25 characters, however, DLC increased the amount to 37. The game also includes over 300 songs, which could amount to a large amount of data depending on the file format.

However, it's also possible that The King of Fighters 15 is generally under-optimized. And with these factors in mind, it's hard to believe that a fighting game is just approximately 4 GB smaller than GTA 5. The King of Fighters 15 looks awesome, but it isn't aiming for photorealism, so improvements in graphics technology don't appear to account for the game's vast size. Maybe, the game proves to be worth such a large amount of content.

On February 17th, 2022, King of Fighters 15 will be released for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
