"Throughout consideration of Russia's ongoing military action in Ukraine, the Federal Council decided on February 28 to implement the EU's February 23 and 25 sanctions packages," the government stated in a statement.
Switzerland has also imposed financial restrictions on Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, which will take effect immediately, according to the Swiss government.
"Switzerland expresses its support with Ukraine and its people; it will supply humanitarian supplies to those who have fled to Poland," the ministry stated, renewing its offer to arbitrate in the conflict.
On Sunday, Swiss President Ignazio Cassis stated that Switzerland will "very likely" support the EU approach.
Switzerland had to strike the balance between expressing solidarity with the West in the face of what it called Moscow's gross violation of international law and retaining its traditional neutrality, which it claims may help it become a possible mediator.
However, it was coming under increasing pressure to stand with the West against Moscow and impose punishing sanctions.
